History

The Floating Table illusion has been around for several hundred years. The original versions were called “Spirit Tables” and used by psychics and other spirit mediums to “prove” their powers. In the mid 1940s, Joe Karson invented an important platform illusion that enabled the performer to levitate small objects like a steel ball. Tommy Wonder improved on Karson’s invention and applied it to other objects as well. Around 1997, Dirk Losander modified Tommy Wonder’s design and applied it to a small table, allowing the table to float. One rumour holds that an unnamed Albanian magician in Yugoslavia invented this version of the floating table in the 1970s. In the greater magic community, however, this rumour is completely rejected because no one has ever produced any evidence to support the claims. And sadly, the only magicians who are now supporting this unfounded rumour are the same magicians who are found fully-supporting the knockoff producers, casting further doubt on the rumour’s claims. The authenticity of the modern floating table is thus decided completely in favour of Dirk Losander based on his proof of invention, his blessings from the Tommy Wonder Estate, support from the magic community at large, and complete lack of any other evidence to suggest otherwise (1).

The effect

The magician shows a small table on stage covered by a small coloured cloth. He places a small box or candlestick on top of the table and takes hold of two ends of the cloth. The table then floats up under the cloth. The performer can release the cloth, relighting the burnt-out candle, or opening the box to show its contents. Taking hold of the cloth once more, the table comes to a rest on the stage floor and the cloth is removed showing there is nothing to be found. This illusion can be done with a spectator holding the other ends of the cloth as well.

Unauthorized copies

Losander is known as “the Master of Levitation.” In the most famous part of his act, a table floats impossibly, darting around as if possessed. It’s not just his signature illusion, it’s his magical legacy. Losander sells his floating tables to magicians around the world. And they can cost a lot of money. At least, that was until a knock-off started appearing on a Chinese website and other unauthorized copies comes on the market. These copies popped up like toxic mushrooms. They are trying to dominate the market and with their extremely reduced pricing, they can to a great degree. But like Losander explain it, the cheap copies don’t work, but the websites would have you believe you’re buying the original product. In fact, one of them displays pictures of Losander’s own tables; it even embeds Losander’s promotional video (2). Imagine you are the inventor of a magical product of art and some people in China or in other countries just copy it and steals your idea in your back without your permission. You have spent money, time, register the mark, given some lectures, spend thousand of hours of researches and developments and it’s happens anyway! The reward for you is to be copied illegally in any impunity? Is that a fair and respectable reward towards your hard creative work? Of course not! We are sure that you can understand how damaging this will become for you if you were one of this inventor. This is not only an illegal direct infringement but it is also misleading the consumers by giving them the impression that they are purchasing one original product. They are also selling it at a third of the price then what it retails for and this is affecting the business of your all dealers as well. This is what Dirk Losander, the man who produce and invented Losander Floating Table™ have been dealing with a continuous problem with plagiarism and the illegal unauthorized production of his various models of tables. Would you still show you on stage with a rip-off floating table? If you meet some magicians in the audience you can be sure they will think also you are just a plagist and your performance have no value.
